Scientist
Asuka Goro has created the Super Suit code-named “Zubat”
and a Super Car “Zuba-Car”. The Criminal
Syndicate “Dagger” is interested in these
inventions and attempts to kidnap Asuka. Childhood friend,
Hayakawa Ken (a private investigator) intervenes and
saves Asuka who is severely injured in the process.
“Dagger”
tracks down Asuka to a local hospital and kills him
right before Ken’s horrified eyes. Ken swears
an oath of vengeance and promises to avenge his friend’s
death. Finding the location of Asuka’s laboratory,
he dons the Zubat suit and sets out on a quest to find
the killers.
Ken’s
only allies are Asuka’s sister Midori and child
tag-along Terada Osamu who follow after Ken on his Japan
cross-country quest.
Ken’s
College Classmate, Inspector Higashijo, Shingo also
pursues Ken hoping he will lead him to “Dagger”.
He is the only one who knows Ken’s real identity. |

Zubat
The Zubat Suit:
Ken’s main weapon in his war against “Dagger”
is the “Zubat” suit. Originally designed by
Asuka Goro for moon exploration, this suit endows its
wearer with superhuman abilities (strength, speed, endurance,
agility, stamina, fortitude). With these powers Zubat
can easily battle the various “Daggar” henchmen
and minions that he encounters.
Unfortunately, the Zubat suit had a certain flaw. The
Zubat powers are only temporary and will start to fade
in five minutes time. If the wearer does not take the
suit off after five minutes, the suit will eventually
kill its wearer. Zubat keeps track of the time allotted
via a “dial” headset he wears on his helmet.
Ken as Zubat also makes use of a bull-whip which he uses
to ensnare and bind his opponents. Ken
stores his Zubat suit in a secret compartment in his
guitar.
Ken
loves to antagonize his opponents and often quips that
their skills only rank #2 in the world while his, he
gleefully exclaims are “No. 1”. |

Dagger
“Dagger” is a multi-national criminal syndicate
operating from a secret base in Japan. They deal in a
multitude of criminal ventures and have incredible resources
to fund their illegal operations. “Dagger”
is composed of a eclectic band of fiends, most of whom
seem to be culled from Japanese Yakuza circles. Its “puppet”
leader is the mysterious robed figure known only as ‘Leader
L’. However, the real mastermind behind this organization
is the masked “President D” who in fact is
revealed to be Interpol Agent Jin Tatsuya, an associate
of Shingo and a friend of both Ken and Asuka Goro.

| Trivia/Factoids |
Main
Theme Data:
“Jikoku No Zubato” (Zubat of Hell)
Performed by: Mizuki Ichiro
Lyrics by: Ishinomori Shoutaro
Composed by: Kyo, Kesuke
Kyo
Kesuke is also the composer behind the music of the
Toho Movie “ESpy” and the Toei Tokusatsu
Series “Kagaku Sentai DynaMan”.
Developed
as a pure starring vehicle for Miyauchi Hiroshi.
Many
of the “Dagger” Agents appear to be parodies
and/or satirical stereotypes of various famous Japanese
Samurai, historical and film celebrities and 70’s
icons.
Supposedly
inspired by the Nikkatsu Film Series “Watari Dori”
(Wanderer – Lit. Migratory Bird) 8-Part Film Series
starring Shishido Jo as a guitar playing/gun wielding
wanderer who battles various thugs and assassins as
he roams the Japan Countryside, longing to return to
his daughter and his previous peaceful life.
The
Films of the Watari Dori Series:
“Guitar
Ou Mouta Watari Dori” (1959) – (The Guitar
Carrying Wanderer)
“Kuchibue Ga Nagareru MinatoMachi” (1960)
– (The Whistling Music of the Port Town)
“Watari Dori Itsu Mata Kaeru” (1961) –
(Wanderer – When Will You Return)
“Akai Sekiyo No Watari Dori” (1960) –
(The Wanderer Bird In Setting Sun)
“Okusa Gen No Watari Dori” (1960) –
(The Wanderer of Okusa)
“Hatou O Koeru Watari Dori” (1961) –(The
Wanderer Conquers The Waves)
“Watanohara Ou Iku Watari Dori”(1961)-(The
Wanderer Goes To Watanohara)
“Watari Dori Kita E Kaeru” (1962) –
(The Wanderer Returns To The North)
The
name “Zubat” is most likely an onomatopoeia
derived from the sound of a bull-whip and possibly the
Japanese word “patto” (quick).
