Story
|
Hirono Kenta is
your average geeky Junior High School student. His childhood
obsession has always been Tokusatsu and Anime. In fact, he
fancies himself as a “Hero of Justice” and often
is seen running around in a makeshift costume of his own design
called “Wing Man.” Most of his fellow classmates
thinks he’s just a crazy “otaku”, but his
childhood friend Ogawa Miku thinks he’s a noble spirit.
One day as Hirono is walking to school, a
beautiful and voluptuous girl, literally drops out of the
sky and into his life.
Hirono, bewildered by the event, none-the-less
takes the girl to his home to recuperate (this is his duty
as a “Hero of Justice”). He also keeps the “Dream
Note” so that he can transpose his favorite “Wing
Man” costume designs into it.
Later, Hirono is confronted by the girl who
reveals herself to be Yume Aoi, Princess of the Dreamscape
called Botoreem. Her domain has been conquered by the power
mad despot, Rimeru and his armies of monstrous “Seed
Men”. She barely escaped her domain with the power artifact
known as the “Dream Note”.
The “Dream Note” enables its possessor
to create anything they desire by merely drawing or writing
information within its pages. Rimeru seeks to steal it to
become Master of the Universe.
She demands that Hirono give her back the
book, but Hirono had already begun drawing into the book (mystically
linking himself to it).
Hirono soon discovers that his designs and
notes on Wing Man become reality and he in turn becomes his
own creation.
Using these powers and abilities, he and Aoi
begin their strange and amazing adventure. Along the way,
Hirono inadvertently involves all of his friends, especially
Miku in his quest to help Aoi free her people and save her
father.
Rimeru sends his various minions to Earth’s
dimension to retrieve the book. One his henchmen is the noble
yet devious Kitakura who goes as far as infiltrating Hirono’s
Junior High School masquerading as a teacher. |

| Differences
Between Anime and Manga |
While the anime
for the most part, attempted to closely follow the storyline
of the manga, there are innumerable differences between the
two. The anime often played up on the comedic antics of Hirono
and the romantic triangle of the three main characters.
The manga on the other hand played up more
on the action and adventure aspects, and had a more darker
tone, especially towards the end of the series. One of the
most notable differences is in the finale.
While the Anime ended with the defeat of Rimeru
and his forces, the manga continued further. Once Aoi and
Hirono defeat Rimeru, an even greater threat appears in the
form of Tei Oh Rieru (Great Lord Rieru) who is a gigantic
sentient computer system.
Using its vast technologies, Rieru is able
to encompass the Botoream star system into a “Jewel
Dome” hence making Botoream into a galactic jewel piece
for his collection. Rieru plans the same fate for Earth and
sends its minions the Lolita-like Dr. Boom, “S &
M” Dominatrix Baluda, and her equally sinister brother
Barudo to pave the way for the capture of Earth. (Rieru is
somewhat similar to the Silver Age DC Comic character Brainiac,
even to the point of mimicking his fascination of capturing
and “bottling” whole civilizations).
Dr. Boom, Barudo and Baluda are each killed
in their brutal battles with Wing Man. Wing Man is also exposed
to the world as Hirono Kenta.
During their final battle, a “giant-sized”
Wing Man seemingly destroys the gigantic Rieru.
At their victory celebration, Kitakura challenges
Wing Man to one final duel.
During the melee, a very humanoid Rieru kills
Aoi with a laser shot from behind (the computer system turns
out to be just a convenient shell for him – a body armor
of sorts).
Kitakura heroically begins grappling with
Rieru and tells Wing Man to kill them both. Wing Man grudgingly,
does so destroying both of them inside his “Death Ball”.
Hirono tries in vain to bring Aoi back to
life by erasing everything in the “Dream Note”
and writing a hundred times his wish for Aoi to be resurrected.
The gesture looks to be futile and the story seemingly ends
on a bleak and dark note, until we are transported back in
time to the fateful day Hirono meets up with Aoi. Hirono has
no recollection of ever becoming Wing Man and he has yet to
draw into the “Dream Note” he found beside the
road.
This time Aoi in a different human disguise
confronts Hirono and secretly steals back the “Dream
Note” from him, but not without giving him one final
farewell kiss. Aoi then leaves Hirono to live out his life
in peace, presumably with Miku by his side (a similar ending
was used in the groundbreaking AIC Anime OVA– Iczer
One [1985] which had the heroine Iczer One turn back time
to save the life of her human “partner” Kano Nagisa). |
| Characters |
|
“Wing
Man” is Hirono’s lifelong obsession. It is his
personal creation, inspired by all his favorite Tokusatsu
and Anime Hero creations of his childhood. Hirono has even
gone so far as to create his own makeshift costume of Wing
Man, which he frequently wears during school.
Hirono sees himself as a “Hero of Justice”
and often gets into trouble when he tries to intervene and
assist his schoolmates.
By virtue of drawing into the “Dream
Note” he has mystically bound himself to the book and
has become his own creation, the “Dream Warrior Wing
Man”.
Wing Man is a full body armor suit, which
gives Hirono various superhuman powers.
Hirono changes into Wing Man by shouting the command “Changu”
(an obvious misspelling by Hirono of “Change”).
Using the powers of the “Dream Note”, Hirono is
surrounded by “Dream Power” which in turn energizes
Hirono with “Wonder Energy” turning him into the
Invincible Wing Man.
In addition to giving him super strength,
enhanced agility, incredible reflexes and limited invulnerability,
it also allows him to fly (via mechanical wings that shoot
out from his back).
With the powers of the “Dream Note”
Wing Man has virtually unlimited power. The only limitation
is Hirono’s own imagination (similar to the U.S. Hero
Green Lantern).
Among some of Wing Man’s arsenal of
weapons include:
Barrier Rapier – Wing
Man’s laser sword.
Chrome Rope – Wing Man’s whip/grappler
rope.
Solar Cutter – Wing Man’s Energy
Weapon
Solar Guarder Shield – Wing Man’s
Armor Enhancements. These attachments give him added power
as well as protection against a Seed Man’s attack. His
Solar Guarder Shield system is powered by Solar Energy. Later
upgrades his Guarder System to an even more powerful protective
system.
Flasher Beam –Wing Man’s heat
beam weapon.
Wing Man’s has a number of special attacks:
“Hit Shock” –
Wing Man can envelop an enemy in an energy field “bubble”
(Death Ball) generated by his Solar Guarder System and then
with a slash of his laser sword (Hit Rapier) he is able to
destroy the enemy and yet keep the destruction contained within
the “Death Ball”.
“Wing Crush” – Wing Man’s
kick attack.
“Contin-Punch” – Wing Man’s
“continual” punching attack.
Wing Man’s mode of transportation is
his transforming bike Winder and Winner II. Both can transform
into robot form (although they aren’t too mobile in
this form).
Wing Man is aided in his battles by many of
his friends and classmates |
|
The Wing
Gals
The Wing Gals were formed by Aoi as a secondary unit
to assists Wing Man when he is in a “pinch”. The
Wing Gals are composed of Aoi, Miku and fellow classmates
Morimoto Momoko and Fuzawa Kumiko. Armed with their Wing Pendants,
they can transform into their cute color-coded uniforms, which
give them enhanced abilities such as flight, agility, speed
and limited invulnerability.
Ogawa Miku (14) – Miku
is a childhood friend and neighbor to Hirono Kenta. She is
the top student in Hirono’s class and is also on the
school’s gymnastic team. The petite and shy Miku has
a bit of a crush on Hirono. While all the students at school
tend to think of Hirono as nothing but a geeky Otaku, but
Miku sees Hirono as a noble and gentle soul.
Miku is a bit of a prude and somewhat naïve
in the ways of love. She constantly is embarrassed when Hirono
attempts to show her affection (she blushes at the mere act
of holding hands or kissing). Despite her inexperience, Miku
has proven to be a valiant and courageous ally, willingly
risking her life many times to save Hirono and Aoi. Has a
habit of saying “warui tou omou” (I think it’s
a bad idea/You shouldn’t do it).
Yume Aoi (16) – Aoi
is the shapely teenage daughter of the King of Botoream. After
her father’s kingdom was attacked and conquered by Rimeru,
she fled Botoream for Earth with the “Dream Note”.
She has incredible magical abilities (which she calls her
“Dimension Power”) and has formidable hand-to-hand
combat skills.
At first Aoi could not stand Hirono and was
miffed by the fact that he had already made the “Dream
Note” his own. Yet, over time Aoi grew found of him.
Although she was two years his senior, Aoi eventually fell
in love with Hirono. This proved to make quite a predicament
for Hirono. While Hirono has always cared for the sweet and
innocent Miku, he could not help but be fascinated by the
brash and sassy Aoi. It also didn’t help that Aoi had
a body to “die for”. Affectionately calls Hirono
“Kenbo” (a variation of Kenta and the word “Bozu”
[boy]).
In the end Aoi tearfully left Hirono to return to her homeworld.
Pink haired Morimoto Momoko
(14) and bespectacled Fuzawa Kumiko (14)
complete the Wing Gals Team. Both girls are on the gymnastic
team and are teammates of Miku. Momoko is the more dizzy of
the two, often getting herself into many a fix (usually involves
instances where her skirt gets lifted and everyone sees her
panties). Kumiko is the dead serious one. She has never had
a boyfriend and wishes that she were a bit more attractive
(she is able to see without her glasses in her Wing Gals mode). |
 |
Yosei
Rio
She is quite possibly a citizen of Botoream. She
has the unique ability to alter her voice so as to create
“sonic screams” (similar to the DC Comics character
Black Canary). She has a habit of calling Hirono her “big
brother” and is a bit of a nuisance. She resembles Chibi
Sailor Moon.
Mimori Kurumi
J-Pop Idol who was saved by Hirono during an attack
by Rimeru. Created quite a stir when she announced to the
Japanese Public that she was in love with Hirono, much to
the shock and dismay of both Miku and Aoi.
Nazo No Senshi
The “Mysterious Warrior” was a masked
superhero who seemed to appear out of nowhere and just at
the nick of time to save Wing Man on various occasions. His/Her
identity was always hinted at and many possible suspects were
considered (Kurumi, Kitakura among the most notable) but in
the end it was revealed to be Aoi’s father, who has
escaped captivity on Botoream.
Seigi Man
The Seigi Man (or Justice Men) are a team of “wannabe”
Sentai superheroes who were formed by Hirono’s fellow
classmates, among which include Masaki and Masao. Similar
to the Wing Gals, the Seigi Man have costumes and abilities
given to them via the powers of the “Dream Note”
and Aoi’s “Dimensional Power”.
Where is Botoream?
Botoream is an alternate dream dimension which exists
parallel to Earth. It is a strange and wondrous dimension
in which there is great beauty and magic. The Botoream populous
is basically humanoid in form but have alien-like appearances
(Aoi’s true form is quite different from her Botoream
form). Botoream is a land of mysticism and magic but also
quite highly developed, with technology hundreds of years
ahead of Earth. Their planetary system resembles the “Mobius”
Strip.
Apertures to Botoream can be opened temporarily
by powerful magic users such as Aoi and Kitakura. This “Botoream
Space” stops all time and movement within a certain
radius of the aperture. Aoi and Kitakura use this to travel
from Earth to Botoream but also as a means to prevent unnecessary
damage to the real world when battles occur (This is somewhat
similar to the concept of Makuu Space in the Tokusatsu Show
Space Sheriff Gavan).
Rimeru
Rimeru is an evil despot from the dream dimension
of Botoream who seeks to conquer not only his dimension but
the dimension of Earth as well. He is an extremely powerful
magic user and can manipulate and alter reality at will (similar
to the demon Freddy Krueger of the Nightmare on Elm Street
series). He seeks the “Dream Note” so that he
can utilizes its powers to make him invincible.
He commands a host of powerful minions whom
he calls his “Seed Men”. These minions have a
wide variety of magical abilities and also utilize various
weird technologies. Most are comical looking but their power
are nothing to laugh at.
Kitakura
Kitakura is one of Rimeru’s henchmen. He is
quite vain but admirably noble. He is a great tactician and
is incredibly intelligent. In order to keep tabs on Hirono,
he even goes as far as to masquerades as one of his Junior
High School teachers. Much to his chagrin, he is the object
of affection of Hirono’s homeroom teacher Ms. Matsuoka.
He has incredible magical abilities and can
manipulate reality within “Botoream Space”.
