Story

The series opens with the perpetually-late Usagi oversleeping again and rushing out the door to school. On her way there, she chases off a group of little kids who were attacking a small black cat. Usagi notices the cat has a bandage stuck to its forehead. She removes it and notices a small cresent moon mark on its forehead. Unfortunately, she doesn't have time to ponder its meaning since she's already late for school as it is. As she runs off, the cat watches he leave with curious eyes.

After a semi-disastrous day at school -- being late and scoring a 30 on a test she took--, Usagi returns home, and after being temporarily thrown out by her mother who found out she flunked the test, Usagi is surprised by a visit from the cat she saved earlier. She's even more surprised by the fact that the cat talks. Identifying herself as Luna, she tells Usagi that she is the legendary Soldier of love and justice and that her mission is to battle the servants of the malevolent Dark Kindgom, ruled by Queen Beryl and to find a young woman known as the Moon Princess. Luna then presents a disbelieving Usagi with a gold locket, enabling her to transform into her Sailor Soldier persona. Usagi does so at Luna's urgings, and in a dazzling henshin sequence, becomes Sailor Moon.

During her combat with the Dark Kingdom, Usagi finds herself being rescued on a regular basis by the enigmatic Tuxedo Kamen. Much of the dramatic tension is built up through him in that no one knows who he is. In his mysterious guise, Kamen appears to serve as a neutral character (at the beginning) in the struggle between Usagi and the Dark Kingdom. Kamen protects Usagi by tossing roses, but his motives are unknown. Unbeknowst to Usagi, Kamen is really high school student, Mamoru Chiba, who dubs her "otango odama" or "dumpling head" because of her distinctive hairstyle. Much to her constant chagrin.

As the season progresses, more of the Sailor Soldiers are found. The first is Ami Mizuno (Sailor Mercury), a schoolmate of Usagi's, who is then followed by Rei Hino (Sailor Mars), a local shrine priestess, and then Makoto Kino (Sailor Jupiter), a newcomer to Usagi's school. Midway through the series, the last of their number, Minako Aino (Sailor Venus--also known as Sailor V) is discovered when the other Sailor Soldiers are captured by two of the Dark Kingdom's generals. With the Inner Soldiers finally united, they begin to search for the Moon Princess. Preceeding Venus' arrival, however, the latter portion of the Sailor Moon season is concerned with the search for both the Moon Princess and the seven Nijuzuishou (Rainbow Crystals) in which the strongest servants of the Dark Kingdom were imprisoned and re-incarnated in human hosts. The Nijuzuishou are crucial for both the Sailor Soldiers and the Dark Kingdom because when they are all combined, the Ginzuishou (Silver Crystal), the cornerstone of the Moon Kingdom's power can be reformed. Beryl requires the Ginzuisho's power to fully revive the demonic Queen Metallia, the Dark Kingdom's true monarch.

However, during Venus' rescue of the other Sailors, Tuxedo Kamen is severly injured in battle with Beryl's subordinate general, Zoisite, who goads Mamoru into a final duel for the Nijuzuishou. In his civilian guise, he arrives at the site of the proposed duel, followed there by Usagi and both of them become Zoisite's targets. Usagi is forced to transform into Sailor Moon in order to save both their lives, much to his surprise. But she is equally floored when he transforms as well. During this portion, it is revealed that Usagi is the Moon Princess and that Mamoru is Tuxedo Kamen. Usagi also finally regains the Ginzuisho during this revelation, making the Dark Kingdom's minions even more determined to take it from her. Mamoru is then captured and brainwashed into opposing the Sailor Soldiers. Throughout this, Usagi maintains her devoted love for Mamoru. This love is essential for Usagi in that it is the only thing that prevents Mamoru from truly harming her.

In the final three episodes of the season, Usagi leads the rest of the Sailor Soldiers to the North Pole to oppose Queen Beryl and the Dark Kingdom. But during the journey there, each of the Inner Sailors, with the exception of Usagi, are eliminated one by one leaving her as the only one able to oppose Queen Beryl; even so, Usagi is still urged on by the spirits of her deceased friends. Finally within the Dark Kingdom's stronghold, Usagi is confronted not only by Beryl, but by Tuxedo Kamen, now completely and fully under her control. So much so that not even the Ginzuisho can free him. It is only through her complete and total love for Maroru that finally sets him free. Enraged at this, Beryl attemts to kill them both by impaling them with a giant crystal shard. Mamoru succeds in mortally wounding her, but he is fatally injured in the process of protecting Usagi. He dies in Usagi's arms moments later. Meanwhile in Metallia's chambers, Beryl pleads with her mistress for another chance, but Metallia's patience with Beryl is finally exhausted, and takes possession of her body, merging them into one being

Metallia/Beryl confronts Usagi outside, and attacks, entombing her in ice, but when Usagi re-appears seconds later, she is no longer Sailor Moon, but Princess Serenity, wielding the Ginzuisho. On the other side of the world, back at Usagi's home, Luna and Artemis somehow sense what she is planning to do, and Luna pleads with her not to release the Ginzuisho's full power, knowing the strain of doing so will kill her. The battle is joined and Metallia/Beryl seems to be on the edge of victory, until the sprits of the other Sailor Soldiers appear, lending their strength to Usagi, who unleashes a gigantic energy sphere that anhilliates both Beryl and Metallia completely. But the cost of victory was a high one as Usagi, completely drained from using the Ginzuisho even with the help of her friends, dies. Her last wish before expiring is for her and the ones she loves to be able to live a normal, peaceful life.

The next day begins as did the first episode with Usagi late for school. Each of the girls is shown, but none of them know each other; apparently the Ginzuisho responded to Usagi's last wish and ressurected them all, including Mamoru. But none of them have their memories of their roles as Sailor Soldiers. And as the first season ends...a legend begins.

Usagi Tsukino/Serena/Sailor Moon
Japanese Voice Actresses/Kotono Mitsushi
(also briefly played by Kae Araki)
American Voice Actresses/Tracey Moore (episodes 1-11, 13, 21, 41)
Terri Hawkes (Terri Hawkes (episodes 12, 14-20, 22-40, 42-82);
Linda Ballantyne (S and Super S)
Signature Attacks: Moon Tiara Action, Moon Healing Escalation
Tranformation Call: "Moon Prism Power, Make-Up!"

The titular character of the series. Usagi is perpetually lazy, gluttonous, flighty, and hates studying in any and all forms. She's also clumsy and a bit of a cry-baby, which is all part of her endearing charm. But in spite of those shortcomings, she has the most loving and compassionate nature of all the Sailor Soldiers. She is never one to abandon a friend and refuses to allow others to be hurt if she can possibly help it. Over the course of the series' run, she matures into a stronger and more capable person.

Ami Mizuno/Amy/Sailor Mercury
Japanese Voice Actress/Aya Hisikawa
American Voice Actresses/Karen Bernstein/Liza Balkan (S and Super S)
Signature Attack: Shabon (Bubble) Spray
Transformation Call "Mercury Power, Make-Up!"

The first of the Inner Sailors to be found, Ami is highly intelligent, possessing an IQ of 250. Shy and introverted, she serves as the Sailor's voice of reason and tactical strategist. In spite of her quiet nature, Ami is strong-willed and always encouraged the others--especially Usagi--to do their best. Including her love of learning, Ami also excels at swimming, and considering her element is water, the sport suits her well. As Sailor Mercury, she also makes use of a hand-held super-computer, and a virtual reality visor activated by her earring.

Rei Hino/Raye/Sailor Mars
Japanese Voice Actress/Michie Tomizawa
American Voice Actresses/Katie Griffin(Epsiode 1- , S and Super S )Emilie Barlow (Eps. )
Signature Attack: Fire Soul
Transformation Call: "Mars Power, Make-Up!"

Rei is a shrine priestess, and the second Sailor Soldier to be found. Rei, like her trademark element, is fiery and temperamental at times, but she reserves her harshest judgments for Usagi, who has no tolerance for her childish behavior. But ironically enough, the two of them become the closest of friends as the show goes on. Along with her powers as a Sailor Soldier, Rei also makes use of anti-evil talismans that can incapacitate and drive off evil sprits.

Makoto Kino/Lita/Sailor Jupiter
Japanese Voice Actress/Emi Shinohara
American Voice Actress/Susan Roman
Signature Attack: Supreme Thunder
Transformation Call: Jupiter Power, Make-Up!"

The "muscle" of the group, Makoto, also referred to as "Mako-chan", came  to Usagi's rescue when she was attacked by a group of thugs. She later discovered that Makoto was a new student at her school. Ignoring the
rumors that Makoto was going around starting fights at her old school, Usagi befriended her, and in return, Makoto offered Usagi her lunch, earning herself a lifelong friend in the process. Makoto is a expert in cooking and homemaking, as well as being an excellent figure skater. But she worries at times that her tough image and her height--she's the tallest of the Sailors--keep her from looking feminine enough. She, out of all the Sailor Soldiers tends to place the most faith in Usagi, realizing that she isn't the complete ditz most people take her for. Makoto lives by herself since her parents both died in an airplane crash some time ago, and as such, has a fear of airplanes. She is probably the most boy-crazy of the group remarking about every attractive guy she sees by the phrase "He looks just like Sempai/my ex-boyfriend!"

Minako Aino/Mina/Sailor Venus (Sailor V)
Japanese Voice Actress/ Rika Fukami
American Voice Actresses/ Stephanie Morganstern/Emilie Barlow
(S and Super S)
Signature Attack: Crescent Beam
Transformation Call: Venus Power, Make-Up!"

Minako is, for all intentions, the original sailor Soldier. Functioning as a crime fighter in Europe for a number of years as Sailor V, Minako garnered a tremendous fan following across the world, including video games and her own anime series. Learning of the Dark Kingdom's revival on Earth, Minako traveled to Japan and rescued the Sailor Soldiers from a trap set by Queen Beryl's generals, and later joined them as the last of the Inner Sailors. Minako has nearly the same whimsical personality as Usagi, but she lacks the total ditz factor Usagi seems to have. Minako can be serious and dedicated when the situation calls for it, however. Minako is also a hopeless romantic with aspirations of being an idol singer.

Mamoru Chiba/Darien Shields/Tuxedo Kamen (Mask)
Japanese Voice Actor/Toru Furuya
American Voice Actors/Toby Proctor (episodes 12, 14-20, 22-40, 42-65);
Rino Romano (episodes 1-11, 13, 21, 41);
Vince Corazza (episodes 66-82)

Mamoru Chiba is a college student enrolled at the Azabu Institute of Technology. His relationship with Usagi is adversarial, at first, and he teases her mercilessly, But as the series goes on and more about his past is uncovered, it's revealed that not only is he the mysterious Tuxedo Kamen, but he was also Endymion, a young prince from Earth, who was in love with Usagi's past life incarnation, Princess Serenity. Tuxedo Kamen employs
roses as throwing weapons, as well as an extendable cane that he uses as a sword-like weapon. Although he seems somewhat arrogant at first, paticularly to Usagi, he's a down-to-earth, likeable guy.

Luna and Artemis
Japanese Voice Actors/ Keiko Han and Yasuhiro Tokado
American Voice Actors/John Ruben and Jill Frappier

The guardian cat advisors for Sailor Moon and Sailor Venus, Luna and Artemis act as assistants and companions to the other Sailors. They also served as counsel for Princess Serenity's late mother, Queen Serenity during the reign of the Moon Kingdom. Luna generally has to be the one to snap Usagi into shape when she starts to slack off about her duties. Artemis is a bit more easy-going than Luna, but no less dedicated in doing the same if he has to.

Queen Serenity
Japanese Voice Actress/Mika Doi
American Voice Actress/Wendy Lyon

The wise and benevolent ruler of the Moon Kingdom, Queen Serenity presided over the peace that was the Silver Millenium, she was respected and deeply loved by her subjects. She led them through a thousand year reign of peace and prosperity, and managed to keep an watchful eye over the entire solar system through the Sailor Soldiers. When the Dark Kingdom invaded the Moon Kingdom, Serenity saw not only her people and home destroyed, but her beloved daughter, Serenity slain before her eyes. In the ultimate act of a mother's love, Queen Serenity unleashed the full power of the Ginzuisho to seal the Dark Kingdom away, and reincarnated her people in 20th Century at the cost of her life.

Naru Osaka/Molly Baker
Japanese Voice Actress/ Shino Kanikuma
American Voice Actress/Mary Long

Naru is Usagi's best friend. A regular presence in the first season and in some of R. She has a tendency to be attacked by the Youma, so Sailor Moon is constantly rescuing her from trouble. She falls in love with Nephrite in the first season, and she gets into a whole bunch of trouble because of this blind infatuation. After Nephrite dies, Naru eventually dates Umino who obviously cares about her deeply and saves her life once. Naru shows up frequently in the first season, less so in R, once in S, none in SailorStars, and once or twice in Super S, her last main appearance being in the Super S movie special, "Ami's First Love". She is a only child living with her mother who owns a jewelry store.

Umino Gurio/Melvin
Japanese Voice Actor/Keiichi Nanba.
American Voice Actor/Roland Parliament

Umino is the archtypical nerd in the series, with big glasses and total smarts. At first, he serves basically as an annoyance to both Usagi and Naru, but eventually becomes Naru's boyfriend after he saves her from one of the Youma with a Nijizuishou. He's very commited to her, and he even proves his love for her in the Affection Contest held during Sailor Moon S.

Haruna Sakurada/Patricia Haruna
Japanese Voice Actress/Chiyoko Kawashima
American Voice Actress/Nadine Rabinovitch

Haruna is Usagi's teacher in the first season and in R. She's young and attractive with long red hair, and over all she seems to be a bit unhinged for a teacher. Her main purpose is to give Usagi trouble for being late to school. She also gets attacked by the Youma every once in a while. Her American incarnation, Miss Haruna is a more stable prescence, but no less stern.

Motoki Furuhata
Japanese Voice Actor/Hirokuki Satou
American Voice Actor/Colin O'Meara

Motoki is Mamoru's best friend in the anime. He runs the Crown Arcade that Usagi and Minako frequently attend. His girlfriend is Reika, who is an archeologist, and one of the carriers of the Nijizuishou. Both Usagi and Makoto have serious crushes on him in the first season, but Motoki regards them both more as little sisters than love interests.

Unazuki Furuhata/Elizabeth (Lizzie)
Japanese Voice Actresses/Miyako Endou/Eriko Hara
American Voice Actress/???

Unazuki is Motoki's younger sister, and she works in a local cafe as a waitress. She's also a high school student, attending the TA Private Girls' Academy, the same school as Rei. Her main roles are when Usagi gets jealous of her when she finds her with Mamoru after he breaks up with her in R and when her heart crystal is stolen in S. She also makes a couple of appearences in Super S.

The Dark Kingdom

Queen Beryl
Japanese Voice Actress/Keiko Han
American Voice Actress/Naz Edwards

Second only to Queen Metallia, Queen Beryl is the acting ruler of the Dark Kingdom. Utterly ruthless and power-hungry, she is looking for the Ginzuisho in order to use its power to restore Queen Metallia to her full strength. Beryl was personally responsible for the deaths of Princess Serenity and Prince Endymion 1,000 years ago and brainwashes him into fighting for her in the second half of the series.

Queen Metallia/The Negaforce
Japanese Voice Actress/Noriko Uemura
American Voice Actress/Maria Vacratsis

The true monarch of the Dark Kingdom. Metallia is a living mass of extra-dimensional energy, possessing unfathomable power. Or at least she did, until Queen Serenity imprisoned her 1,000 years earlier. Although she is in a significatly weakened state, Metallia is till a presence to be feared and respected in the Dark Kingdom.

Jadeite/Jedite
Japanese Voice Actor/Masaya Onosaka
American Voice Actor/ Tony Daniels

The first of Beryl's generals. His goal is to obtain and collcet energy from the humans on Earth for the Dark Kingdom. He frequently appears on Earth in his many identities (why Usagi can never remember what he looks like, I'll never know). He is mainly a failure in his attempts to gain energy. Eventually he discovers the identities of Moon, Mars, and Mercury in episode 13 after he challenges them to a final duel and sees them transform, but Beryl commits a common blunder among all SM master villians: eliminating a subordinate just as he/she's discovered something crucial, and locks him in a crystal block for eternity for failing so many times, and he is never able to tell anyone what he's learned.

Nephrite/Neflyte
Japanese Voice Actor/Katsumi Moji
American Voice Actor/Kevin Lund

Nephrite is the second general, making his arrival in episode 14, and he goes around Earth under a fake name, Sanjouin Masato, trying to gain energy like Jadeite before him. However, since he fails at that, he tries to find the Ginzuishou later on. His job forces him to become involved with Usagi's friend, Naru, whom he first thinks is Sailor Moon and then mistakenly believes she might have the Ginzuishou. He eventually falls in love with her or at least begins to care for her. Nephrite is not on good terms with his fellow general, Zoicite; that turns out to be his downfall, as Zoicite has him killed in episode 24.

Zoisite/Zoycite
Japanese Voice Actor/Keiichi Nanba
American Voice Actress/Kirsten Bishop

Zoicite is the third general who has Nephrite killed off. His job is to find the seven Nijizuishou, which when brought together form the Ginzuishou. Zoicite is extremely vain, petty, and feminine. His lover and teacher is Kunzite, the fourth general. Zoicite is killed by Queen Beryl after he attacks Tuxedo Kamen after defing Beryl's orders to the contrary. Zoisite was changed from male to female in the American version.

Kunzite/Malachite
Japanese Voice Actor/Kuzuyuki Sogabe
American Voice Actor/Dennis Akiyama

Kunzite is Zoicite's lover and mentor. He works with Zoicite later on to get the seven Nijizuishou. The most powerful of the four, he is also their leader. In the aftermath of Zoicite's death, he continues to try and trap Sailor Moon into giving him the Ginzuishou. But he dies in combat with Sailor Moon in Episode 44 when she turns his own weapons--a pair of energy blades--against him.
