Series/Movie Info

Story

A series of jewel robberies rock Japan. The crimes are being committed by a tuxedo clad thief calling himself “Tuxedo Kamen”. He is looking for the fabled “Mystical Silver Crystal” (Maboroshi Gin Suisho) which holds incredible and limitless power. During one of Tuxedo Kamen’s robberies, a mysterious figure calling herself “Sailor V” heroically confronts him. Tuxedo Kamen escapes vowing to continue his search for the mystical crystal.

Enter, Tsukino Usagi, a somewhat naïve Junior High School student who loves to eat, shop and sing Karaoke at a local Karaoke Box called “Crown”. The two most influential people in her life is “Sailor V” (she wishes she were like her) and J-Pop idol sensation Aino Minako (who she adores immensely). One day on her way to school, she encounters a strange doll with a peculiar crescent marking on its forehead. Not thinking much of it, Usagi leaves it on the ground and heads off to school. Later that night, the black cat doll wakes up Usagi and startles her by talking! It is the same doll that she encountered earlier that day. The doll is named Luna and she warns Usagi of the coming threat of Queen Beryl and her “Dark Kingdom”. The “Dark Kingdom” is also searching for the Mystical Silver Crystal and hopes to use it to resurrect Queen Metalia who will give them absolute mystical power.

Luna mentions that Usagi has special powers, which can aid in the battle against “Dark Kingdom”. Shocked and in disbelief, Usagi dismisses the ramblings of Luna and attempts to live life normally until the “Dark Kingdom” attacks again. After much hesitation, Usagi finally unleashes her magical powers and becomes the Pretty Warrior known as “Sailor Moon”.

Along the way Sailor Moon is joined by three other equally magically gifted young girls (Ami, Rei, Makoto) who are revealed to be the resurrected members of Princess Serenity’s Personal Guard – the “Sailor Senshi”. They are later joined by “Sailor V” who reveals herself to be none-other-than Aino Minako AKA Sailor Venus.

Together they battle Queen Beryl’s elite “Shitennou” guardsmen and their mystical “youma” (spirit) demon henchmen.

During the course of their battles, Usagi is revealed to be the reincarnated Princess Serenity, legendary monarch of the Moon Kingdom. Chiba Mamoru, the love interest of Usagi is also unmasked as the mysterious Tuxedo Kamen, who in turn is Prince Endymion, Princess Serenity’s tragic lover.

Luna also joins the team by transforming into her true form, that of a little blue-haired girl, Sailor Luna.

In the end, Queen Beryl’s plans of resurrecting Queen Metalia go awry as Mamoru/Prince Endymion allows Queen Matalia’s spirit to inhabit his own body, transforming him into an evil harbinger of doom. Usagi’s identity is supplanted by Princess Serenity and she uses her powers to kill Mamoru. The resultant emotional shock causes the Mysterious Silver Crystal to destroy the Earth (as had been done centuries before).

Guilt ridden, Usagi struggles with what to do now. Mamoru appears to her as a vision to console her. He informs her that she has yet to unleash the full extent of the powers of the Mysterious Silver Crystal and encourages her to right everything once more. With his encouragement Usagi uses the full power of the Mysterious Silver Crystal to reset everything back to the way it was.

The resultant act shatters the Silver Crystal and strips all the Sailor Senshi of their powers and memories but a lingering emotional connection to Usagi brings the team back together again.

Later on we find that Mamoru and Usagi are engaged to marry. Ami had gone to London to intern as a medical student. Reiko had moved to Kyoto to further train her priestess training. Motoki and Matoko have begun to date and have opened up a new flower delivery business.

Characters

The Sailor Senshi were originally the royal guards to Princess Serenity and were entrusted to serve and protect her and the Moon Kingdom for any evil threat. In their previous lives, Ami, Rei, Makoto and Minako comprised of the team with Minako as leader and Rei as second-in-command. After the cataclysmic destruction of the Moon Kingdom and Earth, cosmic forces resurrected everyone on Earth centuries later. Everyone’s memories were wiped clean, except for a precious few including Minako. Minako thought it wise to pretend to be Princess Serenity as a means to protect the real Princess (whom she did not know was Usagi).

The Sailor Senshi are adapt at gymnastics and acrobatics. Their fighting style incorporates a number of complex gymnastic moves. They possess above normal strength and speed. While each has their own unique set of skills and attacks, they can also combine their elemental forces to launch powerful attacks like “Moon Light Attractive Attack” and “Sailor Moon Planet Attack”.

Tsukino Usagi/Sailor Moon – “Warrior of Love and Justice”

Cute but clumsy Tsukino Usagi is a carefree junior high school student who loves to shop, sing, and eat. She has a near obsession with J-Pop idol Aino Minako and is probably her most loyal and devoted fan. Her life becomes complicated when she meets up with the magical stuffed toy Luna who reveals to her that in her past life she was the magical Princess Serenity of the Moon Kingdom. She was due to marry her longtime lover Prince Endymion, heir to a great kingdom on Earth. Their love however was not meant to be as the dark forces of Queen Metalia attempted to take over the Moon Kingdom. Prince Endymion was killed while trying to protect Princess Serenity and her resultant emotional breakdown caused a cataclysmic backlash which not only destroyed the Moon Kingdom but everything on Earth as well. Centuries later, Earth was reborn and everyone who had died that day was resurrected on Earth.

Usagi at first was unable to harness the full potential of her powers and was barely able to fight as one of the Sailor Warriors. Later, however her growing emotional insecurities and love for Chiba Mamoru/Tuxedo Mask unleashed her full powers as Princess Serenity. As Princess Serenity, Usagi’s personality also changed and became more colder and distant. The memories of seeing Prince Endymion die in her arms, and the destruction of Earth resigned her to the fact that she will always be destined to lose her only love and to destroy Earth over and over again.

As Sailor Moon, Usagi has a host of powers which include her ability to manipulate light to various effects. Later as Princess Serenity, her powers grew even stronger and she was able to repel all forms of attack against her. Her light controlling powers also became more lethal and infinite. She was able to conjure up “shadow” armies which could physically protect her. By releasing the full powers of the Mystical Silver Crystal, she was able to warp and manipulate reality (i.e. destroy/recreate the Earth and rewrite history).

Her special attacks included the “Moon Twilight Flash”, “Moon Tiara Boomerang” and “Moon Healing Escalation”. She carried a Crescent adorned scepter (Moon Light Stick) which she used to focus her powers.

Usagi would transform into Sailor Moon by calling out “Moon Prism Power! Make Up!”, after which she would proclaim “Ai Tou Seigi No Sailor Fuku Bishojyou Senshi Sailor Moon! Tsuki Ni Kawatte Oshiokiyo!” (Sailor Uniformed Warrior of Love and Justice, Sailor Moon! In the name of the Moon, I will punish you!)

Mizuno Ami/Sailor Mercury – “Warrior/Soldier of Wisdom and Water”.

Was one of Princess Serenity’s Personal Guards – The Sailor Senshi in her past life.

A top student at Usagi’s Junior High School, she has a genius I.Q. and had made plans on becoming a doctor like her mother. Is particularly shy and reserved but with Usagi’s help has become more outgoing especially with her teammates.

Was corrupted by the dark powers of Kunzite and Queen Metalia which transformed her into “Dark Mercury”. She nearly killed Sailor Moon with her enhanced abilities but was eventually cured through the healing powers of Sailor Moon.

She developed a crush for the Shitennou member Nephirite, although the relationship never went beyond the initial attraction stages.

She is the elemental Warrior of water and most of her attacks are water and ice based. Her special attacks include “Mercury Aqua Mist”, “Mercury Aqua Blizzard”, “Mercury Aqua Cyclone”, “Mercury Aqua Storm” and “Shining Aqua Illusion”. As “Dark Mercury” she also was able to form a “Liquid Sword” which she would use to attack Sailor Moon. Was later given a star adorned tambourine by Artemis which she could use to further bolster her Elemental Powers.

Ami would transform into Sailor Mercury by calling out “Mercury Power! Make Up!”, after which she would proclaim “Muzu Tou Chisei No Senshi, Sailor Mercury! Suisei Ni Kawatte Oshiokiyo!” (Warrior of Water and Intelligence, Sailor Mercury! In the name of Mercury, I will punish you!).

Hino Rei/Sailor Mars – “Warrior/Soldier of Fire and Passion”

Was one of Princess Serenity’s Personal Guards – The Sailor Senshi in her past life.

Father is a high ranking political figure with the Japanese Government. She became estranged from her father as she blamed him for abandoning her and her mother. Mother died of an illness when Rei was only a child. She was raised as a “Miko” (Buddhist priestess) at a local Japanese Shrine.

Hot-headed and often times stubborn to a fault, she at first was aloof towards Ami and Usagi. Usagi’s naïve charm however slowly won her over and she became a much valued member of the team. Often clashed with the equally competitive, Aino Minako.

She is the elemental Warrior of fire and most of her attacks are fire and flame based. Her special attacks include “Youma Taisan” (Spirit Disperse) , “Akurei Taisan” (Evil Spirit Disperse) and “Burning Mandala”. Was later given a star adorned tambourine by Artemis which she could use to further bolster her Elemental Powers.

Rei would transform into Sailor Mars by calling out “Mars Power! Make Up!” after which she would proclaim “Hono Tou Jiyounetsu No Senshi, Sailor Mars! Ka Sei Ni Kawatte Oshiokiyo!” (Warrior of Fire and Passion, Sailor Mars! In the name of Mars, I will punish you!)

Kino Makoto/Sailor Jupiter – “Warrior/Soldier of Lightning and Courage”.

Was one of Princess Serenity’s Personal Guards – The Sailor Senshi in her past life.

Tall and leggy Kino Makoto was a transfer student to Usagi’s Junior High School. Both her parents had died when she was only a child. Has lived alone ever since. A bit of a recluse at first, she was soon drawn to Usagi due to their mutual affection for Aino Minako. Atlhough she excelled at sports and was a bit of a tomboy at heart, she also surprisingly enjoyed cooking and sewing and had a strong maternal instinct for children. Fell in love with “turtle geek” Motoki, owner of the “Crown” Karaoke Bar. Nearly died while trying to stop Queen Metalia, whose spirit had taken over a rogue Youma.

She is the elemental Warrior of lightning and thunder. Most of her attacks are weather based and involve the manipulation of electrical lightning. Her special attacks include “Supreme Thunder”, “Flower Hurricane” and “Jupiter Thunderbolt”. Was later given a star adorned tambourine by Artemis which she could use to further bolster her Elemental Powers.

Makoto would transform into Sailor Jupiter by calling out “Jupiter Power! Make Up!” after which she would proclaim “Ikazuchi Tou Youki No Senshi, Sailor Jupiter! Mokusei Ni Kawatte Oshiokida!” (Warrior of Lightning and Courage, Sailor Jupiter! In the name of Jupiter, I will punish you!)

Aino Minako/Sailor Venus – “Warrior/Soldier of Love and Beauty”.

In her past life, she was the leader of the Sailor Senshi. Was resurrected as reigning J-Pop idol sensation Aino Minako. Masqueraded as the heroic “Sailor V” to stop Tuxedo Mask from finding the fabled Mystical Silver Crystal (Maboroshi Gin Suisho). For a time, she was thought to be Princess Serenity, holder of the Mystical Silver Crystal until Usagi unleased her hidden powers and revealed her identity as Princess Serenity.

Was diagnosed with a terminal illness that only gave her a year to live. She vowed to fulfill her mission and destiny in the time she was given. Like Zoicite, she retained most of her memories from her past life. She lost her ability to transform into Sailor Venus for a short while. Often clashed with Sailor Mercury over leadership of the Sailor Senshi. In a last attempt to save her life, she agreed to undergo a risky surgical operation but due to complications died on the operating table. Ironically, her last album was released on the day she died. Was later resurrected along with everyone on Earth through the infinite powers of the Mystical Silver Crystal.

Was accompanied by her wise mentor Artemis (who inhabited the body of a white cat doll).

She is by far the strongest of the Sailor Warriors (second only to Sailor Moon). As the Warrior of Love, her powers are based mostly on emotion and empathy. Her strength is above normal as is her athletic and gymnastic abilities. Her special attacks included the “Love Me Chain”, “Venus Beam” and “Rolling Heart Vibration”. As “Sailor V” she also carried a crescent shaped dagger she called her “Crescent Cutter”.

Minako would transform into Sailor Venus by calling out “Venus Power! Make Up!” after which she proclaimed “Ai Tou Mi No Senshi, Sailor Venus! Kin Sei Ni Kawatte Oshiokiyo!” (Warrior of Love and Beauty, Sailor Venus! In the name of Venus, I will punish you!).

Luna/Sailor Luna

In an effort to assist Usagi and her teammates, Luna decides to reveal her true form, that of a little blue-haired girl. Using her “magical cell phone” she is able to “dial up” and transform into a Sailor Warrior (somewhat similar to “Kamen Rider 555). Don’t underestimate her size and youth, as Sailor Luna displayed a number of extraordinary powers. She was able to move and jump at super speeds. Armed with her “magical fan” (Luna Harisen) she would hit her enemies on the head (this didn’t hurt the enemy much but did irritate them immensely). Her “Luna Harisen” could also be transformed into an even more bigger fan called her “Kin Harisen”. She was also armed with a moon crescent scepter (Moon Light Stick) similar to Sailor Moon from which she could focus her power attacks which included her “Luna Screw Candy”.

Luna would change into Sailor Luna by calling out “Luna Prism Power! Make Up!” after which she would exclaim “Ai Tou Chisaki Mono No Tachi No Sailor Fuku Bishoujyo Senshi, Sailor Luna! Tsuki Ni Kawatte Oshiokiyo!” (Pretty Warrior of Love and Small Kids, Sailor Luna! In the name of the Moon, I will punish you!)

Tuxedo Kamen

Tuxedo Kamen is the costumed alter-ego of Chiba Mamoru, who is actually the reincarnated Prince Endymion of the Earth Kingdom. Prince Endymion was the lover of Princess Serenity of the Moon Kingdom. Tragically however Prince Endymion died while trying to protect Princess Serenity from the evil Queen Metalia who had sought to conquer both Earth and the Moon.

Reborn as Chiba Mamoru, Prince Endymion led a rather carefree life of privilege, becoming the ward of a rich family. In fact, the daughter of Mamoru’s benefactor, Kusaka Hina fell in love with him and was due to marry Mamoru.

Mamoru retained some of his memories as Prince Endymion and it was these memories that spurred him to take on the guise of Tuxedo Mask, so that he may seek out the Mysterious Silver Crystal which he believed would enable him to find his lost love Princess Serenity and to prevent any chance of the Earth being destroyed again. As Tuxedo Mask, Mamoru is extremely agile and quick. He carries a walking stick which he can use to block attacks and/or hit enemies.

When he revealed his identity to Usagi, Mamoru discarded his Tuxedo Mask disguise and began to wear the uniform of Prince Endymion. As Prince Endymion, Mamoru wielded a sterling silver sword.

After Mamoru came back from his studies abroad, he proclaimed his love for Usagi, much to Hina’s shock and dismay. Needless to say, their relationship crumbled.
Usagi and Mamoru would later marry.

Led by the mystical sorceress Queen Beryl, the Dark Kingdom was comprised of an army of “youma” (spiritual ghosts) who were devoted to the resurrection of the powerful demonic entity known as Queen Metalia. Queen Metalia had once attacked the legendary Moon Kingdom centuries ago but was defeated by the limitless powers of Princess Serenity and her Mystical Silver Crystal. Queen Beryl vowed to retrieve that crystal and use it to resurrect Queen Metalia, so that she could use her to obtain absolute mystical power.

Queen Beryl
Beautiful but cruel sorceress supreme of the Dark Kingdom. When she was a child she was infatuated with Prince Endymion and sought to win his love.

Cold and calculating, she manipulated her minions into obtaining the Silver Crystal and also in finding the identity of Prince Endymion.

She died when her underground realm collapsed as a result of the resurrection of Queen Metalia.

Shitennou (The Four Kings)
In centuries past they served as guardsmen for Prince Endymion. They died during the destruction of the Moon Kingdom. They were later resurrected by Queen Beryl to serve as her underlings. The members of the Shitennou are as follows:

Jadeite
Youngest member of the Shitennou. Brash and reckless, he was none-the-less extremely loyal to Queen Beryl almost to a fault. Even when his full memory returned, he stubbornly pledged his undying devotion and love to Queen Beryl. Died with Queen Beryl at his side.

Nephrite
Hot tempered and rebellious, he constantly acted on his own often bringing on the wrath of Queen Beryl. When Queen Beryl kidnapped Mamoru, she manipulated Nephrite into killing himself with his own saber (as a means of shocking Mamoru). Was later resurrected yet again, only this time as a normal human. Was befriended by Motoki and given a part-time job at Crown Karaoke. Motoki attempted in vain to find a more appropriate human name for him – Nephurie and Nepikichi among others.

Zoicite
Effeminate, silver-haired member of the Shitennou. Retained memories of what had occurred in his past life. A masterful piano player, his haunting requiems had a number of magical/mystical effects. While he was forced to serve Queen Beryl, his true loyalty was for Prince Endymion. He sacrificed his life to save Sailor Moon. His last dying words professed his love for his fellow Shitennou and Prince Endymion.

Kunzite
A master swordsmen, he was the most powerful of the Shitennou. Using his mystical powers he corrupted Sailor Mercury and had her join him in battling the other Sailor Warriors. Often clashed with his fellow Shitennou and later with Prince Endymion, whom he considered his main rival. Later attempted to commit suicide to escape Queen Beryl’s controlling influence. Died in a final showdown with his rival Prince Endymion.

Kuroki Mio
Queen Beryl’s cold-hearted, human “shadow” agent. Was considered the chief rival of Aino Minako and was ranked as the #2 most popular J-Pop idol in Japan. Manipulative, calculating and mean spirited, Kuroki developed a huge hatred and jealousy for Usagi. Orchestrated a number of cruel “passive-aggressive” torments against Usagi in an effort to humiliate and emotionally destroy her. Even went as so far as to try and seduce Mamoru. Later died at the hands of Queen Metalia who had taken control of Mamoru and made him her servant.

Her death was however not permanent and she later was later resurrected. She sought to rebuild the “Dark Kingdom” with proclaimed herself as its Queen apparent. She was stopped by the Sailor Senshi who had temporarily regained their powers. Her true form was revealed to be a monstrous plantlike demon.

Trivia/Factoids

Based on artist/writer Takeuchi Naoko’s long-running manga series “Bishoujou Senshi Sailor Moon” which ran in Kodansha’s girl oriented magazine “Nakayoshi”.
Began as “Codename: Sailor V” in 1991, a short-lived manga series which ran in “Nakayoshi’s” sister pubication “Rune-Rune” Magazine.

Bared little relation to and in fact greatly differed from the “Bishoujou Senshi Sailor Moon” (Toei/TV Asahi, 1992) animated series which ran from 3/7/1992-2/8/1997.

This was in fact the second attempt at a live action version of the series.

The first was developed as a musical production. During the 2nd season of “Sailor Moon” (Sailor Moon R), a musical stage show was developed and ran that summer in limited engagements. Entitled “Bishoujyo Senshi Sailor Moon Gaiden – Dark Kingdom Bukatsu Hen” (Legend of Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon – The Return of Dark Kingdom) it starred Oyama Anza as Sailor Moon. The musical/stage show ran from Summer 1993 till Winter 1998. The last show was entitled “Bishoujyo Senshi Sailor Moon – Eien Densetsu [Kaiteban]” (Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon – Eternal Legend [Special Edition]).

A second series of live action musical/stage productions debuted the Summer of 1998. Entitled “Shin Bishojyou Senshi Sailor Moon – Densetsu Korin” (New Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon – Legendary Halo) it starred Hara Funami as Sailor Moon. This musical production had a shorter run and lasted until Summer of 1999. The last production was entitled “Shin Bishoujyo Senshi Sailor Moon – Kaguya Shima Densetsu (Kai Tei Ban) – Natsuyashimi! Houseki Tankentai” (New Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon – Legend of Kaguya Island (Special Edition) – Summer! Treasure Hunt).

Yet a third series of live action musical/stage productions began in Winter 2000. Starring Shindo Miyuki as Sailor Moon, the production began as “Shin Bishoujyo Senshi Sailor Moon – Henshin Super Senshi E No Michi – Last Struggle Jyogyoku” (New Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon – Transforming Super Soldiers – Prelude To The Last Struggle). After a record 500 public performances, the stage run ended in the Spring of 2001 with the performance entitled “Shin Bishoujyo Senshi Sailor Moon – Last Struggle Saishujou – Cho Wakusei ‘Death Vulcan’ No Fuin” (New Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon – Last Struggle – Finale Chapter – Stop The Super Planet ‘Death Vulcan’).

Finally, a fourth series of musicals were developed and ran from the Summer of 2001 till Winter of 2004. This production was entitled “Shin Bishoujyo Senshi Sailor Moon – Tanjou! Ankoku No Princess – Black Lady” (New Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon – Come Forth! Princess of Darkness, Black Lady). Kuroki Marina (daughter of Japanese Drama Actress Kuroki Mayumi) portrayed Sailor Moon. After another record breaking performance run of 700, the production ended with the chapter “Shin Bishoujyo Senshi Sailor Moon – Hidama Ouhi Korin” (New Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon – Advent of the Fireball Queen).

A fifth series of musicals is rumored to begin again later this year (Winter 2005). Tentatively entitled “Bishoujyo Senshi Sailor Moon – Shin Kaguya Shima Densetsu (Kaitei Ban)” (Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon – New Legend of Kaguya Island). It is unknown whether Kuroki Marina will return to portray Sailor Moon or if any of the TV series actresses will reprise their roles for the musical.

Most of the musical performances were done at “Sunshine Theatre” in Shinjuku.

In addition to the DVD release of “Special Act”, another DVD-only feature was released entitled “Act Zero” which focused on the exploits of Sailor Venus’ alterego “Sailor V” and Usagi’s adventure with her. Here they battled a human villain known as “Cutie Kenko” played by “pretty boy” singer IZAM (real name Hine Yoshikazu) leader of the eclectic J-Pop group “Shazana”.

Yada Koichi also acted as Producer for the Tokusatsu movies “Ninpu Sentai Hurikanger vs. Gaoranger” (Toei, 2003), “Ninpu Sentai Hurikanger – Shushutou The Movie” (Toei, 2002), “Hyakujyu Sentai GaoRanger vs. Super Sentai” (Toei, 2001) and “Hyakujyu Sentai GaoRanger – Hi No Yama, Hoeru” (Toei, 2001).

Shirakura Shinichiro produced such Tokusatsu projects such as “Gosei Sentai Dai Ranger” (Toei, 1993), “Mechanical Violator Hakaider” (Toei, 1995), “Kamen Rider Agito – Project G4” (Toei, 2001), “Kamen Rider Ryuki – Final Episode” (Toei Video, 2002) and “Kamen Rider 555 [Faizu]” (Toei, 2003).
