Series/Movie Info

Story

When world peace is threatened by the emergence of an international secret society of evil called the “Kuro Jujigun” <Black Cross Army/Black Crusaders>, United Nations sets up a “EAGLE” (EArth Guard LEague) <Kokusaiteki Heiwa Soshiki> to combat the threat. This special army is distributed to various parts of the world (designated as “Blocks”). One of the largest “Blocks” is Japan.

The “Kuro Jujigun” fearful of this united threat against them decides to launch a surprise attack against the Japan EAGLE Block and sends five of its most dangerous cyborg operatives to attack Japan’s various EAGLE branches.

Across Japan the Kuro Jujigun decimates its targets, killing all those who oppose them.

Yet from the ashes of these destroyed bases, five young recruits miraculously survive and vow vengeance. Given a special interlocking “key”, the various survivors are summoned to snackshop “Gon”, secret gateway to EAGLE Japan’s main command center by Japan’s EAGLE Commander Edogawa Kenpachi. There they are given special formfitting electronic battlesuits, which empower its wearer with various superhuman abilities. Edogawa tells them that they are the Secret Taskforce “Goranger”, the world’s best chance against the forces of the Kuro Jujigun.

Armed with these battlesuits and other special weapons created by EAGLE scientists, they extract their revenge upon the Kuro Jujigun operatives who killed their comrades and dedicate themselves to crushing the remaining forces of the Kuro Jujigun and its sinister leader Kuro Jujigun Soutou.

Twenty-four year old younger brother of the Kantou EAGLE base captain. Kaijou was undergoing special training in combat planning and strategy. Is a natural born leader and tactician. While still young and brash at times, he showed a maturity level well beyond his years. Was also the “Ace Striker” for the EAGLE Japan Soccer Team. Was a master of disguise and an expert sharpshooter.

Brother died in the Kuro Jujigun’s attack on their base.

As Aka Ranger, he was team leader of the group and often helped coordinate the group attacks such as the “Goranger Storm” or “Goranger Hurricane”.

Carried a number of special weapons such as a laser gun (Silver Shot) and a multi-purpose whip (Red Beaut) whose end could transform into a number of different weapons such as a drill or claw (Red Hunter). It can also stiffen into a fighting pole.

Rides the supercharged motorcycle “Red Machine” which can race at high speeds. Was later replaced by the “Red Star” super cycle.

Shinmei Akira/Aou <Blue> Ranger
Was training in the snow draped Touhoku region when the Kuro Jujigun attacked. Was a marksmanship instructor.

At twenty-five he is the oldest member of the Goranger team. Fancied American cowboy outfits. Skilled in archery and mecha piloting. Had aspirations of being a racecar driver.

As Aou Ranger he is the designated second-in-command. Piloted most of the Goranger sky vehicles such as “Vari-Balloon” and “Vari-Doreen”.

Armed with the super bow “Blue Cherry” and “Ultra Blue Cherry” which can fire specially designed arrows (Blue Arrows and Blue Arrow Rockets).

He also drove the super motorcycle “Blue Machine” and later the “Blue Star”.

Ooiwa Daita/Ki <Yellow> Ranger
Jovial twenty-three year old Engineering recruit at EAGLE’s Kyushu branch. While adapt in mechanics and mathematics, he had a very hard time solving simple word puzzles and riddles. Being a Judo Champion, Ooiwa was very strong and tough. Had a voracious appetite and often ordered “Omori” <big portions> of everything especially Curried Rice which was his favorite. Is said to have ten siblings.

As Ki Ranger, he was armed with the “Ki Sticker” <Yellow Sticker> which was a fighting pole whose head can be outfitted with various attachments such as a punching fist. He also utilized the “YTC” radio which could jam electronic circuitry.

Ooiwa was later promoted to Chief of the Kyushu EAGLE branch. Kumano Daigoro was recruited from among EAGLE’s other trainees to fill his position. Kumano however fell in battle while battling a Kuro Jujigun operative. Ooiwa soon returned to active duty again with the Goranger team.

He rode in the “Blue Machine/Blue Star” sidecar. Also copiloted the “Vari-Balloon” and “Vari-Doreen” sky vehicles.

Peggy Matsuyama/Momo <Pink> Ranger
Eighteen year-old Eurasian beauty (father was a Swiss national and mother was Japanese). Was assigned to EAGLE’s Hokkaido branch as a chemical analyst and special weapons engineer specializing in explosives. Also had equestrian training.

Leggy and fashionable, she often wore go-go boots and short hip-hugging “hot pants”.

As Momo Ranger, she was armed with an assortment of uniquely “feminine” weapons.

Her heart-shaped earrings doubled as high impact bombs which she would hurl with a curt taunt -- “Are You Ready?…Here We Go!” (Ei Wane..Iku Wa Yo!).

Also carried heart-shaped “Momo Card” throwing shurikens, and a “Momo Mirror” jamming device which would confuse and confound her opponents. Also had the “Momo Ceceli” which could be used to track down and spy on opponents.

Rode in the “Green Machine/Green Star” sidecar.

Asuka Kenji/Mido <Green> Ranger
At seventeen, he is the youngest member of the team. Was training at EAGLE’s Kansai branch. Happy-go-lucky teen, who can sometimes be a bit brash and temperamental.

As Mido Ranger he was armed with a number of unique weapons. His signature weapon was the razor-sharp “Midorang” (Green-boomerang) which can be flung at enemies. He could also use it as a handheld weapon to cut and slash his opponents. His “Midorang” was later upgraded to the “New Midorang” which was a bit bigger.

He also carried the “Mido Puncher” which was an updated slingshot weapon which can be used to fire “pachinko-ball” pellets and sometimes explosives.

Asuka drove the super motorcyle “Green Machine” and later the “Green Star”.

The Goranger Suits
Built by EAGLE scientists, these battlesuits imbue their wears with a number of superhuman abilities. The Goranger helmets tap into and stimulate the central portions of the human mind (cerebrum) thereby increasing human potential and ability.

The suits are activated via electronic circuitry and can generate near 10,000 volts of electric energy. When the wearer shouts “Go!” the suits “materialize” and envelop their wearer in a process known as “denkan” (conversion). This “variable” technology is also incorporated into the Goranger’s other mecha and armaments.

Their personal weapons are “generated” and brought forth from the front of their facemasks.

The battlesuits help to protect their wearers from injury and may also give them enhanced strength to a certain degree.

Attached to the sides of their belts are “Birdie” rockets which enable them to fly short distances.

The Gorangers main special attack is their “Goranger Storm” and later “Goranger Hurricane” attacks.

Using soccer and football tactics they first confound their enemies and then finish them off with a well placed bomb attack, usually taking the form of a soccer ball in the face.

Later using their “variable technology” the Goranger team would use a special football which they would kick and hurl at the opponent. This football would transform into the opponents most feared object (both organic and inorganic). Among the objects the football “transformed” into are a butterfly, an egg, a hammer, a yo-yo, a spider’s web, a pianist and a mole.

In order to defeat Kuroi Jijigun Soutou, they had to combine their individual powers and launch their “Kasiopia” Five Star Attack (Kasiopia – takes the first letters from all the team members’ names – (KA)ijou, (SHI)nmei, (OOI)wa, (PE)ggy, (A)suka).

Vehicles

Red Machine
Aka Ranger’s personal vehicle. Based off of a Suzuki GT750, this super cycle could outrun most high speed vehicles. Was also outfitted with a mini radar system.

Blue Machine
Ao Ranger’s personal vehicle. Ki Ranger would also ride it via sidecar. Based off of a Suzuki GT380.

Green Machine
Mido Ranger’s personal vehicle. Momo Ranger would also ride via sidecar. Based of a Suzuki GT380.

Star Machines (Red Star, Blue Star, Green Star)
Gorangers 2nd set of super cycles. Enhancements included more armor plating and newer “Richium Engines” would increased their speed and performance. The Red Star and Blue Star machines also had weapon attachments in front (a machine gun and an acid gun respectively).

Vari-Balloon
Despite the name, this vehicle wasn’t a balloon or was even balloon shaped (perhaps a closer name would be Vari-Vavoom). Gorangers’ aircraft transport. More akin to a gigantic transport helicopter, the Vari-Balloon would carry the Gorangers across long distances. It would also house the Vari-Tank assault vehicle or their super motorcycles.

The Vari-Balloon was equipped with a number of weapons, including rocket launchers (Midori Missles) and a capture net. Its main weapon was its “variable” mouth which open to reveal a number of different tools including grappling cranes, water hose systems, radar equipment or a pincher arm.

Vari-Doreen
Gorangers’ second airship. Resembled more a harrier aircraft or hover plane. Could fly at incredible speeds. Had Vulcan Missile launchers under its wings (Sky Rock <Rockets>). Also could fire its “talons” at enemy fighters (Space Wing).

Both airships were piloted by Ao Ranger and Ki Ranger and could also be piloted by them remotely (Vari-Doreen had an onboard computer which could also fly the craft automatically).

Both airships were docked within a special building near snack shop “Gon” (in the heart of the city).

Vari-Kikyun
VarikiKyun was the Gorangers’ balloon-like spy vehicle. It could fly short distances undetected by radar. The Vari-Kikyun was equipped with a “Vari-Hand” which would be used to grab or haul objects. The Vari-Kikyun was piloted by Momo Ranger.

Vari-Tank
Gorangers’ “variable” assault vehicle. Could be used both on land and sea. Had a wide assortment of weaponry including rocket launchers and machine guns. Also had a number of special weapons including:

Gyro Compass
which could be used to pick up large objects or crush boulders.

Ten Fingers
mechanical “hands” which could be used to manipulate and pick up objects the larger “Gyro Hands” could not.

Anchor Launcher
large harpoon-like launcher.

The Vari-Tank was armor plated and could repel most small and heavy armed attacks. It was usually used to break though enforced structures and barriers. The Vari-Tank also had a large drill which it could use to bore through the earth.

Who Are EAGLE?
EAGLE (Earth Guard League) is an international peacekeeping organization, devoted to protecting the world from the secret terrorist society calling itself Kuro Jujigun (Black Cross Army).

EAGLE was organized by the United Nations and was assigned to protect various parts of the world designated as “Blocks” (there are ten world “blocks”).

The commander of the Japan “Block” is Commander Edogawa Kenpachi. Within Japan there are various smaller branches of EAGLE spread across the island (Kantou, Kyushu, Hokkaido, Kansai and Touhoku).

Japan’s EAGLE scientists developed the unique technology encorporated by the Secret Taskforce “Gorangers”. They developed the suits as a means of countering Kuro Jujigun’s super cyborg technology.

When operating in the public, Commander Edogawa Kenpachi disguises himself as the cook at Snack Shop “Gon”, which was the secret entrance to the Goranger headquarters. The shop later became the “Fruit Parlor”.

Commander Edogawa was assisted by a trio of beautiful secretary/agents: Katou Yuko (AKA Agent 007), Hayashi Tomoko (AKA Agent 008) and Nakamura Haruko (AKA Agent 009). They usually acted behind the scenes but occasionally helped the Goranger team in some of their missions.

Aside from the Goranger team, another frequent visitor to the snack shop was Yoko’s bratty brother, Taro who would always make a habit of teasing Ooiwa with word puzzles and riddles.

The shop’s mascot was a black mynah bird called “Gon”, who seemed to be more intelligent than normal and who could actually converse with the Goranger team.

Who Are The “Black Cross”?
The “Kuro Jujigun” (Black Cross Army/Black Crusaders) are an international terrorist society led by the supernatural entity known as Kuro Jujigun Soutou (Black Cross Führer). Their goals are the total eradication of the human race and the absolute domination of the world. They utilized advanced technology and cybernetics to create an army of superhuman operatives to attack EAGLE and Goranger. The also used “supernatural magic” on occasion to empower its agents. Most of the “Kuro Jujigun” operatives are “remodeled” humans who have been enhanced through surgery.

They had various secret bases across the globe, the main headquarters being the flying castle “Kuroi Juji Tou” which orbited high above the Earth.

Kuro Jujigun Soutou <Black Cross Fuhrer>
The Kuro Jujigun’s supreme leader. Kuro Jujigun Soutou was often referred to as the “Machine Monster” for his seeming invincible nature. He could not be easily killed by any conventional weapon. Had numerous supernatural powers and was incredibly intelligent. Kept his identity a secret even among his generals but revealed his true form later on. In reality he was not even humanoid but rather a sentient alien machine construct who was part of Kuro Jujigun’s flying castle headquarters “Kuroi Juji Tou”. He could also disguise himself as human (both male and female). Was finally defeated when the Goranger team combined their powers and launched their “Kasiopia” Five Star attack,

Nichirin Kamen <Sunring/Sun Halo Mask>
The so-called “Star/Sun of Africa”. A ruthless tyrant who was renowned for his successive victories in Africa. Was called to Japan by Kuro Jujigun Soutou to help battle Goranger. Often used whatever means necessary to win. Often let his cowardly nature get in the way of his operations. Frequently battled one-on-one with Aka Ranger. Could manipulate and generate intense fire at will (often focused through his staff).

Tetsujin Kamen Temujin Shogun <General Iron Mask Temujin>
The so-called “Mongol Demon”, he was recruited from Kuro Jujigun’s Gobi Desert operations. A cold and sadistic operative, he was a brilliant tactician and also formed his own army called the “Steel Brigade” (Tetsu Gundan). Vain and prideful, he often let his ego get in the way of his operations. Was virtually indestructible thanks to his steel armor. Carried a battle staff which ended in a sickle-like blade.

Hi No Yama Kamen Magman Shogun <General Fire Mountain/Volcano Mask Magman>
Recruited from the volcanic Eldgja region in Iceland. Leader of the ruthless “Funkan Gundan” (Eruption Battalion). A cruel and calculating despot, he commanded his own mobile battle fortress dubbed “Navarone” (named after the Nazi Cannons off the Greek Aegean Islands in WWII). Had the ability to fire napalm missiles from the top of his “volcano” Mask. Was impervious to Gorangers’ weapons and was a master combatant. His main attack was his “Volcano Mask Rage Eruption” (Hi No Yama Kamen Ikkari No Dai Funkan).

Golden Kamen Dai Shogun <Supreme General Golden Mask>
Kuro Jujigun’s top general. A supernatural entity that was mystically awoken through Black Magic and Kuro Jujigun Soutou’s powers. Took command of Kuro Jujigun’s elite African/Egyptian Troopers. Versed in sorcery and keenly interested in astrology. He could repel most of Gorangers’ attacks and was near invincible. He was so fiercely loyal to Kuro Jujigun Soutou that he sacrificed his own life to reveal the location of Goranger headquarters.

Kotetsu Kenryu <Steel Sword Dragon>
Renegade Kuro Jujigun operative who was imprisoned by Kuro Jujigun Soutou for his recklessness and rebelliousness. Was later freed by Kuro Jujigun Soutou in exchange for his help in destroying Goranger. He was an incredibly strong fighter and was impervious to harm. He could easily repel Gorangers’ “Hurricane Attack”. Wielded the mighty “Sen Ryu Tou” <Imperial Dragon Sword> which could cut and destroy almost any object.

Kuro Jujigun Kamen Kaijin <Black Cross Masked Monsters>
Selected from the most vicious and evil of Kuro Jujigun’s ranks, these operatives have been surgically enhanced with a variety of weapons and abilities. Most sport hideous “masks” that are the source of their powers. Others carry elaborate weaponry that they can use against the Goranger team. All were cyborgs with some having been further empowered with supernatural abilities.

Zolders <Black Cross Army Footmen>
Kuro Jujigun’s faceless foot soldiers and henchmen. Dressed from head to toe in black leather, these soldiers have been altered with enhanced strength and speed. They have also been brainwashed to be absolutely loyal. They carry a variety of weapons including machine guns, bazookas and iron swords.

Specialized divisions have also been created such as the “Kuro Jujigun Nindan” <Black Cross Ninja Army> who specialize in subversion and infiltration and the “Africa Gundan” who are the elite soldiers who serve Golden Kamen Dai Shogun. There is also a squad of mystics who serve Kuro Jujigun Soutou and are adapt at the Black Arts.

The Zolders commanded a number of bird-like vehicles including the small air fighters called “Condoras” and the much larger and powerful “Battlers”.

Often can be heard shouting “Hoi” when attacking their victims.

Trivia

Is considered the first “Sentai” series and helped to establish Toei’s long running hero team formula which is still being used today.

“Goranger” not only means “Five Rangers” but is also a word play for “Go! Rangers”.

Was a monstrous hit when it first debuted on Japanese TV in 1975 (commanded a near 25% audience viewing share).

Episodes were broadcast subtitled on KIKU TV in Hawaii in 1978 and may have also been seen limitedly in other local Japanese Community channels in the U.S. such as San Francisco and Los Angeles.

When Ishinomori Shoutaro first conceived the series for Shukan Shonen Sunday, he originally planned on making it a straight spy drama/action series but ended up making it more of a comedy-action/gag series.

Makoto Naoya has starred in a number of Toei Yakuza films including “Gendai Yakuza – Chi Zakura San Kyodai” (Three Brothers of the Blood Cherry Blossoms; Toei, 197), “Furyo Bancho – Nora Inu Kidotai” (Juvenile Boss – Stray Dog Riot Squad; Toei, 1972), “Furyo Bancho – Ichimodaijin” (Juvenile Boss – The Big Haul; Toei, 1972), “Ban Koku Rock” (Juvenile Rock; Toei, 1973), “Shin Jingi Naki Tatakai” (New - Fight Without Honor or Humanity; Toei, 1974), “Jingi Naki Tatakai – Kanketsu Hen” (Fight Without Honor or Humanity – The Final Chapter; Toei, 1974), “Ando Gumi Gaiden – Hitokiri Shatei (The Legend of the Noburo Ando Group/Gang – Internal Assassination; Toei, 1974), “Truck Yarou – Gyoken Miyo” (The Wild Trucker – For Your Viewing Pleasure; Toei, 1975), and “Truck Yarou – Otoko Ippiki Momojiro” (The Wild Trucker – A Man By The Name of Momojiro; Toei, 1977). Tokusatsu Fans may also recognize him as Daisuke Misaki AKA Fireman in “Fireman” (Tsuburaya, 1973). Makoto also starred as Chief Inspector Yuji Yoshino in the hard-boiled detective series “Tokusou Saizensen” (Special Investigations Frontline; 4/6/1977-3/26/1987, Toei).

Miyauchi Hiroshi is probably one of the most recognized faces in Tokusastu TV happening appeared and starred in a number of Tokusatsu shows. Among the characters he’s portrayed are Kazami Shiro/Kamen Rider V3 (“Kamen Rider V3” – Toei/Ishinomori Pro, 1973), Banba Sokichi/Big One (“JAKQ Dengeki Tai” – Toei/Ishinomori Pro, 1977), Hayakawa Ken/Zubat (“Kaiketsu! Zubat” – Toei/Ishinomori Pro, 1977), Commander Masaki Shunsuke (“Tokkei WindSpector” <Special Command WindSpector> Toei/Ishinomori Pro, 1989); (“Tokushu Shirei Soulbain” <Special Directive Soul Bain> – Toei/Ishinomori Pro, 1991) and Captain Miura (“Choriki Sentai OhRanger” - Ishinomori Pro, 1995).

Tall and leggy actress Komaki Risa was born 1/14/1954 in Tokyo, Japan. She was just 22 when she starred in “Goranger”. Her height was 163 cm (5.3 ft.). After “Goranger” she tried her hand at singing but eventually went back to children’s TV, this time as a suit actor for the Sentai series “Battle Fever J” (Toei, 1979) where she filled the form fitting costume of Ms. America (Eps. 1-16).

Hatakeyama was born 6/18/1944. Prior to “Goranger” Hatakeyama was Keba Soucho (Leader Keba) one of the intelligent apes in the TBS Sci-Fi show “Saru No Gundan” (AKA Time of the Apes; TBS, 1974). Due to a scheduling conflict, Hatakeyama was unable to continue as Ooiwa and left the series briefly in 1976. He was replaced by burly comedian, Daruma Jiro. Once Ooiwa’s schedule cleared up he again came back to the show to finish up the series.

Ito was born 12/16/1955 in Tokyo, Japan. His height is listed as 170 cm (5.6 ft.) Before “Goranger”, Ito portrayed Nomura Takeshi in the TBS Ultra series “Ultraman Leo” (TBS, 1974). He later appeared in the Nikkatsu film “Nikutai Akuma” (Demon of the Flesh; Nikkatsu, 1977).

Takahara could be seen in Akira Kurosawa’s seminal samurai movie “Chichinin No Bushi” (AKA Seven Samurai, 1954) as one of the rifle wielding bandits. He would appear in a number of period and crime dramas throughout the 60’s (mostly for Nikkatsu studio) before appearing in “Goranger”.

Sadly, as with other fallen Tokusatsu actresses (i.e. Morinaga Naomi), Kanuma Eri’s career hasn’t faired too well after Tokusatsu. Outside of “Goranger”, Kanuma may be best remembered as the victimized Tsuchiya Nami in Tanaka Noburu’s infamous addition to the “Tenshi No Hayata” (AKA “Angel Guts”) series, “Tenshi No Hawata – Nami” (Nikkatsu, 1979). She also starred in a string of other “Roman-Porno” features for Nikkatsu including “Eros Gakuen – Hatsujyou Jidai” (Erotic School – Time of New Beginnings; Nikkatsu, 1979), “Sukeban Mafia – Nikukei Lynch” (Sukeban Mafia – Flesh Punishment; Nikkatsu, 1980) and “Shudoujou – Kokue No Naka No Uzuki” (Nunnery – Passion Under The Black Robe; Nikkatsu, 1980).

While Ando Mitsuo is best known as wacky Professor Gill in “Kikaider”, he also played other villainous Tokusatsu characters such as Monster Kyojyu (Dr. Monster) in the Japanese TV Series “Spiderman”, Gaizelle Soutou (Leader Gaizelle) in “Inazuman Flash” and Raider in “Uchu Keiji Spielban”.
