Story

Kisugi Hitomi and Utsumi Toshio are high school sweethearts living in the heart of Tokyo, Japan. Hitomi works at a local coffee shop called “Cat’s Eye” which she co-owns along with her older sister Rui. Their younger sister Ai is a high school sophomore with a genius I.Q and high aptitude in mechanics. They live in a stylish modern flat just above the shop. Toshio is a fledgling detective with the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department, where he’s frequently berated by his over-demanding supervisors. While Hitomi and her sisters seemingly live a carefree life they harbor a unique secret. Under the guise of a female theft ring called “Cat’s Eye”, Hitomi and her sisters have been stealing the art works of their famous artist father Michael Heintz, who had mysteriously disappeared when they were children. Hitomi, Rui and Ai hope that their father’s art works will give them clues to finding his current whereabouts. Things get complicated however when Hitomi finds out that Toshio has been appointed lead detective of the task force setup to stop Cat’s Eye. Can Hitomi and Toshio’s love survive the trials and tribulations that Hitomi’s secret life has opened up?

 Characters

Who Are the “Cat’s Eye?

Kisugi Rui (Age: 27)
Hitomi’s elegant and fashionable older sister. Leader of the “Cat’s Eye” group and the one who usually outlines and plans the heists. With model good looks, worldly sophistication and a razor sharp intelligence she is able to handle almost any situation. She is extremely athletic and is proficient in a great number of activities and skills including car racing, hang gliding, parachuting, helicopter piloting, motorcycle riding, roller skating, skateboarding, martial arts, electronics, handguns and scuba diving.

She is a skilled actress and is able to disguise her appearance effortlessly. She is fluent in a number of languages including English, French and German.

She acts as the “mother figure” for her sisters and is very protective of them. She is the only sister who has any lasting memory of their father and mother.

Kisugi Hitomi (Age 24)
Second daughter of Michael Heinz. She is usually the one who actually commits the heists. Like Rui, she is an accomplished athlete and well versed in a number of disciplines and skills ranging from horseback riding to safe cracking. She is a skilled gymnast and is able to perform complex acrobatic moves with ease and grace. She is able to escape most restraints and handcuffs with minimal effort (it is inferred that she is ambidextrous and also double jointed). She is a skilled martial artist with proficiency in a number of disciplines, most notably Judo and Karate. She has also degrees in Kendo and Aikido.

Like Rui she is also able to disguise her appearance effortlessly and can speak several other languages.

Kisugi Ai (Age 16)
Baby sister of the trio. Has a spunky, tomboyish personality and demeanor. Has a genius level I.Q. and is particularly adapt in mechanics, computer programming and engineering. She has built a wide array of gadgets to help her sisters in their heists. A typical teenager, she seems to be preoccupied a lot and dreams of falling in love. Has a pet kitten.

While not as skilled as her sisters, Ai has none-the-less mastered a number of skills and is regularly the one who operates the get-away vehicles for the heists, including helicopters, gyrocopters, trucks, motorcycles, cars and mini-airplanes.

The sisters’ calling card is a razor-thin throwing card adorned with a red cat ‘emblem’. The sides of these special cards are so sharp that they can slice through metal, skin and can be imbedded into concrete walls.

Other Notable Cast Members

Utsumi Toshio (Age 24)
High School sweetheart to Hitomi. Always dreamed of being a police detective even when in high school. Assigned to the ‘Inunaki’ (Crying Dog) District Police Station in the heart of Tokyo.

While Toshio has wanted to marry Hitomi, he has vowed not to until he has captured the “Cat’s Eye” team (he has however made the first step and proposed to her).

While he is a bit clumsy and not very good at finding clues, his dogged determination and unyielding persistence has impressed his supervisors. He is however very stubborn and gets into verbal fights with his Chief constantly.

Toshio doesn’t carry a gun and prefers to use his wits and fists to contend with criminals. Has a weakness for beautiful woman and constantly makes Hitomi jealous.

Asatani Mitsuko (Age 24)
Special Investigator sent in from Tokyo Police HQ to assist in the Cat’s Eye investigations. She is considered an elite officer of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department. She is an expert markswoman (won the “All Japan Air Pistol Championships”). Has a very shrewd intellect and has a very cunning personality. Is proficient in several martial art forms (4th Degree Black Belt in Karate; 2nd Degree Black Belt in Judo). She is also quite a beauty (she was crowned a beauty queen during one of the “Cat’s Eye” cases).
Her main weakness is that she must wear prescription glasses all the time (she is practically blind without them). While never really elaborated in the TV series, in the manga she is said to have a secret crush on Toshio, much to the chagrin of Hitomi.

Nagaishi
Trusted friend and confidant to the three sisters. Provides them with detailed information for their heists and also helps them acquire any hardware and/or other sophisticated equipment that they may need (outside of Ai’s gadgets). Was a very good friend of Heinz and his wife. His background is a mystery but he may have been a member of the Armed Forces (Japan? U.S.?) as he has some military expertise.

Kacho (Chief/Boss)
Toshio’s demanding Section Chief. Oversees the Detective’s Division of the ‘Inunaki’ Precinct. Nothing really is known about him (even his full name is never disclosed). Is constantly at odds with Toshio over his handling of the “Cat’s Eye” investigation.

Who is Michael Heinz

Michael Heinz was an artistic prodigy in Germany during the 1930’s. He was so gifted that by age 10 he already began composing the beginnings of his impressive art collection. When the Nazi party began taking over Germany, Heinz fled the country for fear of political/artistic suppression. Traveling around the world, he eventually settled down in Japan where he met and married a young Japanese woman. After the birth of their third daughter, Heinz traveled to the U.S. where he disappeared under mysterious circumstances. His vast and priceless collection of art works were soon auctioned off and dispersed to art dealers around-the-world. Eventually many pieces found their way back to Japan in the hands of various private deals (many with criminal ties). In subsequent years, the collection were stolen piece by piece, by a trio of thieves calling themselves “Cat’s Eye”, who secretly were the grown daughters of Heinz seeking clues to his whereabouts.

It is not known what happened to Heinz, although many speculations have been offered. One theory suggests that Heinz was being pursued by a criminal syndicate that wanted to exploit and profit from his vast collection of art works. In order to keep these from them, he sold the pieces to various art dealers around the world and went into hiding to keep his family safe.

It is never revealed whether Rui, Hitomi and Ai were ever eventually reunited with their father although in the manga they do find that their father is in the U.S. again and they go there to track him down.

What is the Heinz Collection?

The Heinz Collection is a priceless series of works created by the talents of wunderkind artist Michael Heinz. The Collection contains not only elaborate paintings and lithographs but also one-of-a-kind jewelry, sculptures and metal works. Heinz’s was even able to create exquisite musical instruments. As such Heinz’s works were highly sought among art collectors and galleries and many would pay exorbitant amounts to own one of his works.

Trivia

Based on Hojo Tsukasa’s popular and titillating manga series “Cat’s Eye” which ran from 1981 to 1984 in the pages of “Shonen Jump” magazine.

Hojo Tsukasa’s followed up “Cat’s Eye” with the even more outrageous and popular “City Hunter” which followed the exploits of self-proclaimed “fixer/sweeper” Saeba Ryo and his shapely but bratty assistant Kaori. In a neat crossover gag, Ryo’s hulking mercenary friend “Umi-Bozu” purchases and begins managing the “Cat’s Eye” coffee shop.

The “Cat’s Eye” TV series has been dubbed and distributed to many European markets. Some of the translated titles include “Ein Super Trio” (German), ”Occhi di Gatto” (Italian), ”Ojos de Gato” (Spanish) & ”Signé Cat's Eye” (French).

Often unfairly compared to Monkey Punch’s seminal heist manga/anime “Lupin San Sei AKA Lupin The Third”.

Singer Anri’s (Real Name: Kawashima Eiko) haunting “Cat’s Eye” theme song was a big hit for her in 1983 and established her as a J-Pop icon. Anri first debuted in 1978 with the album “apricot jam” and the single “Kotton Kibun” after which she has had a string of hits including “Omoikiri American”, “Sixteen Beat”, “Olivia Ou Kiki Nagara”, “Surf and Sea”, “Kanashimi Ga Tomaranai”. Her American-style pop ballads and European inspired dance tunes have been a constant fan favorite among J-Pop fans and she has also written for other J-Pop singers. She is a frequent visitor to and sometime resident of Hawaii.

Anri also sang the remix-remake of the song that made her famous for the live-action movie "Cat’s Eye" movie.

There have been at least two live-action adaptations of the series:

Cat’s Eye (1988)
Saturday TV Drama Special
Produced by: NTV (Nippon TV)
Aired: July 23, 1988 - 7:00 p.m.
Cast: Hayami Yu, Mio, Tachibana Risa

This made-for-TV special starred Mio (one-half of 70’s J-Pop super group “Pink Lady”), Hawaii schooled J-Pop idol Hayami Yu and Tachibana Risa (star of the “Be-Bop High School” films) as Rui, Hitomi and Ai respectively.

Cat’s Eye (1997)
Directed by: Hayashi Kaizo
Screenplay: Hayashi Kaizo, Tsuchiya Tokio
Produced by: Fuji TV & Burning Productions
Starring: Fujiwara Norika, Izumi Inamori, Uchida Yuki, Uchida Kenta, Kane Kosugi, Jiang Wenli, Terao Akira and Yamazaki Naoko.

Big-budget movie adaptation of the anime series, directed by Hayashi Kaizo, visionary behind the cult movie “Zipang”. This version starred three of the most stunning actresses at the time Izumi Inamori, Fukuda Kyoko & a blonde Uchida Yuki as Rui, Hitomi and Ai respectively. While the basics of the story were retained, other elements were totally twisted around. Heinz was made into a criminal mastermind behind a Chinese Triad syndicate who needed his artwork to fund their various criminal enterprises.

Some may be surprised to find that Toda Keiko was the voice behind the sinister Iczer-2 in “Tatakae! Iczer-1”. Some of her other seiyuu credits include Sato Yumiko (“City Hunter”), Osono (“Kiki’s Takyubin AKA Kiki’s Delivery Service”) and Ayanosuke/Ayame (“Yotoden”).

Fujita Toshiko also portrayed the ill-fated Mamiya in “Hokuto No Ken” and the lovely Rally Cheyenne in “Silent Moebius”.

Sakamoto Chika voiced little Ichinose Kentaro in the fan favorite “Maison Ikkoku”. She also provided the voices for Nuriko in “Fushigi Yuugi”, Kazuya in “Kimagure Orange Road” and Mei in “Tonari No Totoro AKA My Neighbor Totoro”.

Yasuhara Yoshito also portrayed Kanzaki Satori in “Area 88” and Louis in “Tenku No Shiro Laputa AKA Laputa: Castle In The Sky”.

Sakakibara Yoshiko later went on to portray Silia Stingray in “Bubblegum Crash!”, Tachiki Sayuri in “City Hunter”, Sybil in “Black Magic M-66”, and Nagumo Shinobu in “Kido Keisatsu Patlabor”.

The Corey Yuen’s Hong Kong film “So Close” (Eastern Productions/Columbia/Tri-Star; 2002) borrowed elements from “Cat’s Eye” for its story. As in Cat's Eye, sisters take revenge against a wrong committed against their father. In the case of "So Close", an evil Conglomerate had attempted to steal a super Global Positioning System (GPS) called “World Panorama”, which was developed by their father. The Conglomerate kills their parents, leaving them to eventually grow up to become deadly assassins. Using their father's computer GPS program and their talents as professional killers they launch a two-woman war against the companies responsible for their parent's death.

The three sister’s names translated to English mean:

Rui = Tear
Hitomi = Pupil/Eye
Ai = Love
